IEEE PES Portugal Chapter Earns National Recognition in 2025 Outstanding Chapter Award
The IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Portuguese Chapter has been named a 2025 Qualifying Chapter in the prestigious IEEE PES Frank Lambert Outstanding Chapter Award (OCA), one of the highest honors bestowed annually on PES chapters worldwide for excellence in service, engagement, and operational leadership.
The announcement was confirmed by the IEEE PES Chapter Awards Committee, chaired by Jahangir Khan and Vahid Vahidinasab, following a rigorous evaluation process assessing chapters across four key dimensions: Chapter Activities, Membership Value, Chapter Operations, and Other Contributions. To qualify, chapters must achieve a minimum score of 45 out of a possible 100 points, a threshold reserved for organizations demonstrating sustained excellence and measurable impact on their members.
Competing in the Small Chapter category (fewer than 100 members) for Region 8, the Portuguese PES Chapter distinguished itself among an international field that included chapters from Tunisia, Colombia, and Hungary — this year’s category winner and runners-up. While the Portuguese Chapter did not claim the top prize, its qualification places it among a select group of just five chapters worldwide — alongside chapters from Vancouver, North Jersey, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Nigeria — recognized for meeting the award’s demanding standard of excellence.
“We consider this a meritorious award,” said Vítor Monteiro, PhD, Senior Member of IEEE and Associate Professor at the University of Minho’s Department of Industrial Electronics, who shared the news with chapter colleagues. Monteiro, a longtime contributor to the chapter’s activities, forwarded the official results with visible pride on behalf of the chapter’s leadership.
This recognition underscores the continued growth and professionalism of the IEEE PES Portuguese Chapter, whose officers and volunteers have worked to expand technical programming, strengthen member engagement, and elevate the chapter’s operational standards — efforts now formally validated on the international stage.
The Frank Lambert Outstanding Chapter Award, named in honor of former PES President Frank Lambert, is presented annually to chapters judged to provide the greatest overall contribution and service to their members, reinforcing IEEE PES’s mission to advance excellence in the global power and energy engineering community.
