IEEE Portugal Section Announces Winner of the 2025 Best PhD Thesis Award
The IEEE Portugal Section is proud to announce Mohsen Barzegar as the winner of the 2025 Best PhD Thesis Award, recognizing his outstanding doctoral research and its significant contribution to the field of engineering.
Barzegar’s PhD work, completed at Instituto Superior Técnico, is titled “Damage Imaging in Guided Wave-based Inspection of Adhesive Joints.” His research addresses a critical challenge in structural health monitoring: achieving more accurate, non-destructive evaluation of adhesive joints using guided wave techniques. This topic plays a vital role in industries where bonded structures are essential — from aerospace and automotive engineering to civil infrastructure.
The award jury highlighted the thesis for its scientific rigor, methodological innovation, and potential impact on next-generation inspection technologies. Barzegar’s findings advance the understanding of wave propagation in bonded interfaces and introduce refined imaging strategies that could lead to safer and more efficient maintenance procedures.
Each year, the IEEE Portugal Section Best PhD Thesis Award celebrates exceptional contributions from emerging researchers in Portugal. The 2025 award once again underscores the strength and global relevance of the country’s engineering research community.
The IEEE Portugal Section congratulates Mohsen Barzegar for this remarkable achievement and extends its recognition to all nominees who continue to push the boundaries of knowledge and innovation.
