IEEE Portugal Local Board Meeting 2024: Strengthening Student Branches Connections and Skills
The 5th edition of the Local Board Meeting (LBM), hosted by IEEE Portugal, unfolded vibrantly on the 17th and 18th of February. Despite the challenges presented by the virtual landscape, the event thrived as a platform for students and student branch members to forge connections, exchange technical insights, and enhance their managerial skills. This year, attendees eagerly participated in a diverse array of activities tailored to enriching their experiences within IEEE.
Among the highlights of the event were interactive sessions and workshops encompassing various dimensions of professional growth and technical skills. From understanding the intricate dynamics of IEEE’s structure and networking opportunities to delving into the world of soft skills, participants were immersed in a rich environment of learning and collaboration. Here are some of the key highlights:
- Meet IEEE Portugal Section: Students had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the structure of IEEE, establish contacts, network with peers, and explore various opportunities within the organization.
- Meet an IEEE Fellow: Isabel Trancoso, a Professor at IST ULisboa and a researcher at INESC-ID, shared her experiences and its impact on professional growth and development throughout her career.
- Membership Development: Sara Barros, IEEE Region 8 Membership Development Past-Chair, delivered a compelling session on membership development. Fundraising Initiatives: A segment dedicated to fundraising explored avenues for collaboration with companies, EPICS projects, and SPAx initiatives.
- Meet IEEE Portugal Affiliated Groups: Two special sessions were dedicated to the opportunities and the impact of Women in Engineering and Young Professionals, performed by their respective chairs Cláudia Antunes and Samuel Carvalho, respectively.
- IEEE Portugal Communications Toolbox: IEEE Portugal Communication Team unveiled a comprehensive communications toolbox designed to equip Student Branches with the necessary resources for effective communication and outreach.
In essence, the 5th edition of IEEE Portugal’s Local Board Meeting not only brought closer the IEEE student branches dispersed across Portugal’s universities but also fostered their collaboration in future events. Moreover, it underlined the profound impact they can collectively have in society, and particularly in their academic environment.
