Engineering Day 2023: Advancing Well Being with Engineering

The recent occurrence of Engineering Day 2023 was a notable convergence of Portugal’s engineering excellence, featuring a blend of technological innovation and celebratory spirit. Hosted on November 17th at the prestigious University of Porto, the event served as a focal point where Medicine, Biology, and Engineering harmoniously intersected under the theme “Advancing Well Being with Engineering.”

The University of Porto, recognized for its academic eminence, provided an ideal setting for this significant gathering. Despite geographical constraints, the event facilitated remote participation or immersion in the vibrant in-person experience.

Engineering Day was a platform where the IEEE community convened, fostering insightful exchanges, igniting innovation, and strengthening connections within Portugal’s engineering landscape. The agenda was brimming with impactful sessions led by distinguished speakers and thought leaders:

  • Dr. Anna-Maria Pappa delivered a keynote on “Organic Bioelectronic Sensors,” setting a tone for insightful discussions.
  • Dr. Filipe Freitas Pinto explored “Knok and the Digital Transformation of Health,” shedding light on the evolving healthcare landscape.
  • Dr. Sara Reis navigated through the “Real Challenges in Bringing Innovation to Market” in the Medtech sector.
  • Dr. Leonor Cerdá Alberich unveiled the intriguing “EUCAIM Initiative – European Federation for Cancer Images.”
  • Prof. Ana Madureira presented insights into “MELECON 2024,” offering a glimpse into the future of engineering conferences.
  • Prof. Michael G. Hinchey shared valuable insights into “IEEE Region 8 Programs and Strategies,” unveiling avenues for growth and development.

The event acknowledged excellence through the IEEE Portugal Best PhD and MSc Outstanding Awards, in addition to the IEEE Portugal Section Awards. The day concluded with a captivating closing session, complemented by a live performance presented by the Academia de Música de Costa Cabral, marking the end of a day brimming with knowledge, innovation, and celebration.

The enthusiastic participation and unwavering commitment showcased at Engineering Day 2023 illustrate the collective pursuit of engineering expertises and collaborative innovation. As this year’s event draws to a close, our anticipation builds for the upcoming edition. Until we convene again for further enlightening sessions next year, let’s persist in our shared journey towards a future propelled by innovation and the exchange of knowledge.
