Inside IEEE Portugal

Following the success of the IEEE Day interviewsThe IEEE Portugal Section, realized a new series of interviews called Inside IEEE Portugal. The interviews follow the same script as the IEEE Day video, where we ask our IEEE Portugal members, specifically, the executive commission of IEEE Portugal Student Branches and the Student Activities Committee members the impact IEEE had on them.

Although the way each interviewee found out about IEEE is different, there is always a common link between them, i.e., they found them through the IEEE Student Branch of their universities. As Aline Gouveia, secretary of the IEEE Portugal Student Activities Committee, explained:

I found out in an introductory mechanical engineering course when I was still in Brazil. In this course, several student organizations presented their activities, which included IEEE. I had no idea what IEEE was, but afterwards I really liked WiE and when I arrived in Portugal I sign up for WiE. (…) Women in Engineering is an IEEE affinity group who promotes gender equality in scientific and technological areas.

As Miguel Simões, the coordinator of the Student Activities Committee, expalins that:

There are many benefits to being a member of the IEEE Student Branch, honestly, from the possibility of working on multidisciplinary projects, creating new friendships, and being involved in activities that otherwise would not have been possible. Above all, you grow as a person.

Similarly, Levy Mitsugui, the chair of Robotics and Automation Section at Universidade do Porto Student Branch, stated that:

Do you feel like you have gained some skills? Many, too many, and I am still Do you feel like you have gained some skills? Many, too many, and I am still deal with taught me to be responsible. As the chair of RAS, I am responsible for the others members and our projects, while before I was just a member and I had those who cared about me. Now I am the one who cares about others and tries the best to help them.
