Empowering Change: IEEE's Call for Climate Change Service-Learning Projects

Climate change is an undeniable global crisis that requires concerted efforts from all sectors of society. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is taking a proactive stance in addressing this challenge. Through the initiative at climate-change.ieee.org, IEEE is committed to providing engineers and technologists with the resources and platform they need to combat and mitigate the effects of climate change. One significant step in this direction is the call for service-learning projects, which empowers students worldwide to make a difference while gaining critical knowledge for their future engineering careers.

EPICS in IEEE is an integral part of this commitment. It has extended its support by announcing a call for environmental-focused service-learning projects. This initiative enables students from across the globe to engage in projects that directly address the environmental and technological needs of local non-profit organizations. These projects are designed to provide practical solutions, bridging the gap between academia and real-world climate action. Moreover, participants will acquire invaluable knowledge and experience that will serve them well in their future engineering endeavors.

Project Details:

  • Timeline: All projects should be designed to be completed within one year or less, ensuring that the impact is immediate and tangible.
  • Involvement of IEEE Members: Participation of IEEE members is essential in all proposed projects. Their expertise and commitment are crucial for ensuring the success of these initiatives.
  • Collaboration: Teams are encouraged to collaborate with local IEEE sections, chapters, and affinity groups, as well as IEEE student branches. This collaborative effort leverages the extensive knowledge and resources available within the IEEE network.

Selected projects will not only make a meaningful contribution to climate change mitigation, but will also receive significant support:

  • Funding: Projects selected will receive financial support of up to $10,000 USD, enabling them to implement their proposed solutions effectively.
  • Mentorship: Guidance and mentorship will be available to ensure that projects progress smoothly and achieve their intended goals.
  • Resources: Access to valuable resources and tools will be provided to assist project teams throughout their journey.

EPICS in IEEE is proud to collaborate with several partners who share a commitment to addressing climate change. If you are affiliated with one of these partners, please refer to the partner requirements section for specific details on how to participate in this initiative. IEEE’s call for service-learning projects to support the initiative to address climate change is a significant step toward a more sustainable future. By empowering students to take action and contribute to real-world solutions, IEEE is not only combating climate change, but also nurturing the next generation of engineers and technologists who will lead the way in addressing this global crisis. This initiative showcases how collaboration, mentorship, and financial support can transform innovative ideas into impactful solutions. As we embark on this journey to combat climate change, it’s clear that IEEE is committed to fostering a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
